Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about Great Sage: the G key not responding, chatty announcements, birth and Uniques, voice input, servers, Raphael and performance.

Released FAQ v0.0.1 5 min read

The questions that come up most, with short answers and a link to the page with the details. Answers apply to the public 0.0.6.1 and to 0.0.7 in early access; when something only exists in 0.0.7, it says so.

The Sage and its menu

I press G and nothing opens.

The menu is the Sage: you must carry the Unique skill Great Sage (or a Raphael). Without it, the key tells you why nothing opens. If you do carry it: another mod may use G (the mod tells you), change the key in Controls; or the world turned the Sage off with /gamerule sageInterface false. See Great Sage menu and Controls.

Do I need Great Sage to hear announcements?

No, by default skill announcements and ceremonies work for everyone. The needGreatSage gamerule can reserve them for Sage carriers. The menu, Assess Mode, remarks and voice always require the skill. See Gamerules.

Why is my Sage limited in a world I already had?

Since 0.0.6, progression is on by default: the Sage starts limited and grows in its tree. /gamerule sageProgression false opens everything, as before.

My Sage experience no longer rises.

Experience only comes from new things — a species never seen, a skill never recorded, an item never appraised, a completed analysis — and only if you carry the Sage. Doing the same thing again gives nothing. An operator can diagnose it with /greatsage xp <player> info (see Commands).

How do I get Raphael?

Not yet: Raphael's node is visible at the top of the tree with its conditions, but it does not open in the current version. Exception: the FoxAblaze Ultimate addon grants its own Raphael, and Great Sage then plays its scene. See Raphael's evolution.

Announcements

The Sage announces too much.

Several settings, from finest to broadest:

  • right-click a skill in Records or the analysis constellation: it will no longer be announced;
  • remove a rank from announcedTiers (resistances are by far the most frequent);
  • quiet mode (compactSkillAnnounce), possibly for some ranks only (compactTiers).

See Skill announcements and Configuration.

An announcement never ends, how do I stop it?

The Panic stop key, Delete by default: it clears everything, right away (announcements, voice, bubble, remarks, mic).

Why is there a gap where a name should be?

That name has not been recorded yet. The sentence is still spoken and the name stays on screen. See Voice coverage.

I hear two announcements for each skill.

You probably also have the Tensura Voice of the World mod, which does the same by reading the chat. Keep only one. See Addon compatibility.

Nothing is announced when I join, is that normal?

Yes: for 5 seconds after you join or respawn, the Sage stays quiet, because Tensura re-grants your race's whole kit at that moment (joinGraceTicks).

The birth

I want Tensura's reincarnation screen.

Escape twice during the scene opens it for this birth; /gamerule sageReincarnation false gives it back to everyone. See Reincarnation.

If I skip the scene, do I lose my Unique?

No (fixed in 0.0.7): if no wish was made, Tensura rolls its usual draw when the screen closes.

I only got one Unique even though I have several resets.

Fixed in 0.0.7: at the end of the birth, Tensura runs its full draw (Uniques owed for resets, locked skills, bonus chance), minus the Unique your wish gave.

Where can I find the list of figures and what they give?

Nowhere, on purpose: the table is shuffled in secret, per player, per world and every life (reincarnationShuffle setting). A shared list would not help you. The first wish always gives a Unique; what you draw decides which.

I got a weird addon Unique at birth.

Since 0.0.7, only the Uniques addons list in Tensura's birth list can drop (reincarnationAddonUniques), and reincarnationExcludedSkills lets you exclude others.

Voice and microphone

Does the mod download anything?

Only if you turn on voice input (voiceInput is no longer off): the recognition library (≈ 25 MB, once) and your language's model (32 to 87 MB). Off — the default —, nothing is ever downloaded. Everything runs offline: nothing you say leaves your machine.

I do not have a microphone.

Type /sage <your request>: the same requests as by voice. See Voice commands.

It does not understand what I say.

Check the recognition language (voiceLanguage): it must be the one you speak, ideally the same as your game's, since skill names follow the game language. Also adjust voiceConfidence. See Languages.

Does the Sage speak English?

It always speaks Japanese. Subtitles and menus follow your language (eight languages), and you can talk to it in seven. See Languages.

Servers and display

Does the mod need to be on the server?

Yes, on the server and on every client: the server detects acquired skills. A client with the mod can join a server without it, but will get no announcements.

The new scenes look wrong / my game lags (0.0.7).

Shader rendering is on by default in 0.0.7. /gamerule sageShaderRendering false brings back the classic look, which says and does exactly the same. If Magic Sense is the heavy part, lower auraMaxEntities or auraRange. See Shader rendering.

I want to see the "What's new" page again.

Empty the lastSeenVersion option in greatsage-client.toml: it comes back the next time you open the menu.

I want to record without the interface.

showWithHiddenHud = true keeps announcements visible after F1.
