Getting started
Installing Great Sage and its dependencies, what happens in the first minutes of a new world, and the settings worth knowing right away.
Great Sage installs like any other Tensura: Reincarnated addon: one .jar file in the mods folder, with nothing to download beyond what Tensura already asks for. This page covers installation, the first minutes in a new world, and the few settings worth knowing before you play.
What you need
| Mod | Version | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 | — |
| NeoForge | 21.1.0 or newer | built and tested on 21.1.244 |
| Tensura: Reincarnated | 2.0.0.0 or newer | tested on 2.0.1.1 |
| ManasCore | 4.0.0.0 or newer | already required by Tensura |
| Architectury API | 13.0.0 or newer | already required by Tensura |
Tensura itself requires GeckoLib, SmartBrainLib and TerraBlender: if your Tensura starts, you already have everything. Other Tensura addons are optional — Great Sage adapts to whatever is loaded (see Addon compatibility).
Installation
- Install NeoForge 1.21.1 and Tensura: Reincarnated, and check that the game starts.
- Drop
greatsage-<version>.jarinto themodsfolder. - Updating: remove the old
greatsage-*.jar. Two versions side by side will not start. - In multiplayer, install the mod on the server and on every client.
The first minutes
1. Birth
In a new world, where Tensura would open its reincarnation screen, the Voice of the World speaks: you are dead, it confirms it, and it asks what you want. You draw three figures with the mouse — the first wish always grants a Unique skill — then pick your species in a carousel. Everything is explained in Reincarnation.
Prefer the original screen? Press Escape twice during the scene, or turn it off for everyone with /gamerule sageReincarnation false.
2. The first announcements
As soon as a skill arrives — evolution, Predator, learning, a command — the Sage announces it. The first five seconds after you join the world are silent: Tensura re-grants your whole racial kit at that moment, and the Sage does not recite it. See Skill announcements.
3. The Great Sage itself
The menu (G), Assess Mode (V), the remarks and the voice require you to carry the Unique skill Great Sage (or a Raphael). Without it, the G key tells you why nothing opens. The first time you open the menu after an update, a "What's new" page comes first.
4. Growth
The Sage starts limited: it can only analyse Intrinsic and Common skills. It earns experience from every discovery (species, skill, item, analysis) and opens up in its growth tree.
Settings worth knowing right away
| You want to… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Cut an endless announcement | the Panic stop key, Delete by default |
| Get discreet announcements in a corner | compactSkillAnnounce = true (or the Settings page) |
| Never hear one skill again | right-click it in the Records or the constellation |
| Get the classic look back (0.0.7) | /gamerule sageShaderRendering false |
| Unlock everything from the start | /gamerule sageProgression false |
| Keep Tensura's screen | /gamerule sageReincarnation false |
The two config files are config/greatsage-client.toml (your display, your voice) and config/greatsage-common.toml (what the server decides). Every option: Configuration; the gamerules: Gamerules; the in-game Settings page: Settings and What's new.
