Languages

The Sage always speaks Japanese; its subtitles and menus come in 14 language files, and you can talk to it in seven languages with offline voice recognition.

Released Guide v0.0.1 3 min read

The Great Sage always speaks Japanese: that is its voice, whatever your language. What changes is the text — subtitles, menus, messages — which follows your game language, and the language you speak to it in when you use voice commands.

Text

Subtitles and interface follow the language chosen in Minecraft's options.

Language Files Since
English en_us 0.0.1
French fr_fr, fr_ca 0.0.2 (subtitles), fr_ca in 0.0.6
Spanish es_es, es_mx, es_ar, es_cl, es_ec, es_uy, es_ve 0.0.6
Korean ko_kr 0.0.7
Portuguese (Brazil) pt_br 0.0.7
Turkish tr_tr 0.0.7
Vietnamese vi_vn 0.0.7

Minecraft does not fall back from one regional variant to another, only to English: that is why Canadian French and the six Spanish variants each have their own full copy.

  • Kanji and Japanese lines stay Japanese in every language: they are what shows in large type during announcements.
  • Skill names: translated in French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese; kept in English in Vietnamese and Turkish, where players look them up under that name.
  • The Sage's replies are translated too: directions, weather, weaknesses, dimensions and biomes come back in your language.

Talking to the Sage

Voice recognition runs offline, on your machine, with a small model per language. Nothing is downloaded while voice input stays off (voiceInput = off, the default).

Language Code Wake words Model
English en great sage, wise one, sage 41.2 MB
French fr grand sage, sage 42.2 MB
Spanish es gran sabio, sabio 39.8 MB
Portuguese (Brazil) pt grande sábio, sábio 32.5 MB
Turkish tr büyük bilge, bilge, yüce bilge 36.9 MB
Vietnamese vi hiền giả vĩ đại, hiền giả, đại hiền giả 33.7 MB
Korean ko 대현자, 현자, 위대한 현자 86.9 MB

On top of that comes the recognition library, about 25 MB, once.

Choosing your language

  • The first time you carry the Sage in a world, once the acquisition animation is over and things are calm, a window asks which language you will speak to it in: a dropdown (mouse, wheel, arrow keys, or digits for the first nine). "Later" or Escape puts it off until the next launch.
  • The question comes back once per world, with your current language preselected.
  • After that, change it on the Settings page or with the voiceLanguage option (see Configuration). Until a language is chosen, it listens in English.
