Assess Mode

The Sage's gaze (V, B): auras through walls, lock and scan, range, the target sheet, failure beyond ten times your EP, and nausea.

Released Mechanic v0.0.4 6 min read

Assess Mode (解析鑑定, "Analytical Appraisal") is Great Sage's gaze. Opened, it hides the game HUD, drops a blue filter over the world and shows the aura of every living thing around you, even through walls. Lock a target, keep it in range for the length of the scan, and the Sage gives you its species, existence value, health and highest-ranked abilities — as long as it is not too far above you.

Requirements

  • Carry Great Sage (or a Raphael), as for the menu.
  • The sageInterface gamerule on (default). See Gamerules.
  • The keys are in Controls → Great Sage: "Assess mode" (V) and "Lock and scan target" (B).
  • By voice: "assess", "open assess mode", "close assess"; "scan this" opens the mode (the scan itself is still B).

Opening the gaze (V)

V opens and closes the mode. On opening:

  • the game HUD disappears as with F1 (it comes back exactly as it was when you close);
  • a night-blue veil falls over the world, with scanlines sliding down and a single reticle in the middle;
  • the Sage says "Understood. Executing Analytical Appraisal."; on closing, "Understood. Terminating Analytical Appraisal.";
  • top left: ANALYTICAL APPRAISAL — ACTIVE and your own existence value; bottom left, the scan status.

Every value comes from the server, twice a second: the client does not know other beings' EP, and the server decides what can be read.

Auras

Every living thing within 64 blocks gets an aura (the server sends at most 48, strongest first):

  • it is projected onto the screen, not drawn in the world: it is a reading of power, not an object, and it shows through walls;
  • its size follows the being's EP relative to yours, on a logarithmic scale — otherwise a creature a thousand times stronger would fill the screen and everything else would be dots; it shrinks with distance;
  • it is blue, and red once the being exceeds 5 times your EP (the "Danger threshold" setting, assessWarnRatio).

Lock and scan (B)

  1. Aim at a living thing and press B: the target is locked ("Notice. Target confirmed.") and framed by brackets that fit its size.
  2. Hold B while staying in range: the reticle ring fills ("Analyzing.") and a line sweeps down the creature.
  3. When the ring is full, the server answers.
Figure Value
Aim up to 64 blocks (or your reading range if larger)
Reading range assessRange = 48 blocks × Long sight (up to × 2.5 = 120 blocks)
Fill rate 1.4% per tick: ≈ 3.6 seconds
If you release B or move away the ring drains (3.5% per tick: empty in ≈ 1.4 s)
Minimum distance none: you can read a creature right next to you
Target lost if it dies or goes beyond 64 blocks (or range + 8)

The status line, bottom left: "Aim at a target and hold the scan key.", "Hold the scan key.", "Too far. Close in." (these two blink red), "Scanning...", "Analysis complete."

A finished reading blocks nothing: aim at another creature and press B again, no need to close the mode. The full ring fades 0.9 seconds after the result.

The result

The Sage says "Notice. Analysis complete. The target's information has been recorded." and a window opens on the right of the screen:

Line Content
Name the creature's name (or its given name)
Species its Tensura race
Awakening Demon Lord Seed · True Demon Lord · Hero Egg · True Hero · Blessed — only if any, in red once the awakening is complete
Alignment only when out of the ordinary (majin in red)
Existence value its EP, red above the danger threshold
Power balance a line on a logarithmic scale: equality in the middle, what you dominate on the left, what dominates you on the right (two orders of magnitude each way)
Health its max health
Notable abilities the 5 highest-ranked (Ultimate, then Unique, Extra…), coloured by class (same palette as the announcements), then "+N more"

If the target is above the danger threshold, the Sage follows up: "Notice. Survival probability in combat drops sharply. Evasion is recommended."

Only resistances the creature has really mastered are listed: every entity carries the whole set of resistances as dormant potential, and listing them gave a rabbit the sheet of a Demon Lord. Latent skills (negative mastery) never are.

The full entry (up to 40 abilities, grouped by class) goes straight into the Observations.

Failure: too strong to read

The Sage does not read what is beyond him. If the target's EP exceeds your EP × assessEpRatio (10 by default) × the Deep read bonus:

  • nothing is revealed;
  • the Sage says "Negative. The target's information volume exceeded the allowed threshold. Analysis failed.";
  • the screen tears (offset bands, 0.9 s) and the mode closes;
  • you get Nausea IV for 15 seconds.

When the gap is already obvious at lock time (over assessEpRatio times your EP), the request goes out at once, with no scan: the server decides straight away.

Deep read Reading ceiling
none 10 × your EP
I 15 ×
II 25 ×
III 40 ×
IV 60 ×

Nausea: standing near something stronger

Two separate punishments, not to be confused: the refusal hits when you analyse a target that is too strong; the sickness hits when you stay near something too strong with the mode open.

While the mode is open, every half second the server checks the most powerful being around you (within 64 blocks, or your reading range if larger):

  • above your EP × assessNauseaRatio (8 by default) × the Steady bonus → Nausea III (the real game effect, 10 s, renewed while it lasts);
  • above 4 times that threshold → Nausea IV;
  • each rank of Cold blood takes one level off; with both, Nausea I remains (II for a huge gap) — only Raphael is meant to remove the threshold altogether one day.

It stops by itself once you walk away or close the mode.

Steady Nausea threshold
none 8 × your EP
I 12 ×
II 18 ×
III 28 ×

What the tree improves

Assess branch Effect
Long sight I / II / III Range × 1.25 / × 1.75 / × 2.5 (60 / 84 / 120 blocks with the default range)
Deep read I to IV Reading ceiling 15 / 25 / 40 / 60 × your EP
Steady I to III Nausea threshold 12 / 18 / 28 × your EP
Cold blood I / II Nausea one / two levels weaker
