Skill announcements

How the Great Sage announces every acquired skill: the Japanese sentence step by step, burst grouping, quiet mode, subtitles, the panic key, and the five markers 告 是 了 否 解.

Released Mechanic v0.0.1 6 min read

This has been the heart of the mod since the very first version: every skill you acquire is announced out loud, in Japanese, by name, the way the Great Sage does it for Rimuru. Not a jingle per rank — the actual name of the skill, spoken, while the Sage's core opens on screen and the name slams into place on the exact syllable it is said. Tensura's chat messages are untouched: the announcement comes on top.

告。ユニークスキル『大賢者』の獲得に成功しました。 — Koku. Yunīku Sukiru "Daikenja" no kakutoku ni seikō shimashita. — "Notice. Acquisition of the Unique Skill Great Sage: successful."

How an announcement unfolds

# What you hear What you see
1 The Sage's manifestation (a sound effect) the screen darkens, cinema bars, the core opens
2 告 Koku — "Notice." —
3 The rank: Yunīku Sukiru (Unique Skill)… the category header slams in
4 The name of each skill each name crashes into place, with an impact
5 続けて Tsuzukete — "Continuing…" between ranks (after a ceremony or an evolution) the next category
6 の獲得に no kakutoku ni · 成功しました seikō shimashita the block closes

The core — a wireframe icosahedron computed in 3D, surrounded by three orbital rings, rays and a central star — breathes with the voice: it swells on peaks, its edges brighten, its rays stretch. It is not a loop: every clip's amplitude envelope is measured when the mod is built and read back at the right offset while it plays.

A dark veil (darkenStrength, 0.72 by default), cinema bars, a core in additive light, names that crash in with a bounce, a trail and a white flash on the first impact. This is how the public version looks, and how 0.0.7 looks when the sageShaderRendering gamerule is false.

The same announcements redrawn by shaders, with a full-screen backdrop per kind: a jade network for an ordinary skill, and a backdrop of its own for each ceremony or evolution. The announcement is laid out in a virtual frame that follows your GUI scale: nothing overflows, even at a high GUI scale. See Shader rendering.

Burst grouping

An evolution often unlocks a dozen skills within a few ticks. Rather than stacking ten announcements, the Sage collects them:

  • each new skill pushes back a 10-tick window (batchWindowTicks); when the burst stops, one sentence is built, grouped by rank;
  • an ordinary announcement then stays open while skills keep coming, and waits 2 seconds of silence (ceremonyHoldTicks, 40 ticks) before saying its closing words. This is what fixes Predator, which hands out skills in waves a few seconds apart: latecomers join the announcement in progress instead of starting a new one;
  • adding a skill moves nothing that has already been said: the announcement grows without ever replaying a clip;
  • an announcement too long for the screen is paginated: the block clears and starts again from the top, following the voice;
  • up to 4 announcements can wait their turn (maxQueued).

The order of ranks in the sentence is configurable (tierOrder):

Default order Rank
1 Extra
2 Unique
3 Ultimate
4 Intrinsic
5 Common
6 Resistance

What gets announced, and what does not

  • Only what is actually acquired: a skill that merely becomes learnable triggers nothing, and neither does a latent skill (negative mastery, such as a resistance still being built).
  • Only skills: magic spells from Tensura or its addons are not skills, and the Sage does not announce them.
  • All six ranks: resistance, intrinsic, common, extra, unique, ultimate — all announced by default, configurable with announcedTiers.
  • Not on login: for 5 seconds after you join or respawn (joinGraceTicks), the Sage stays silent — Tensura re-grants your whole racial kit at that moment.
  • Not what you silenced: a right-click on a skill, in the Records or the analysis constellation, adds it to the blacklist (skillBlacklist); a second right-click restores it.
  • A finished analysis is announced too: 告, the name, then the end-of-analysis line ("Understood. Analysis complete. Skill mastery has improved."). In the menu the Sage simply says it; outside, you get the full announcement. See Skill analysis.
  • A fusion (skills lost, then a Unique or Ultimate learned within 3 seconds) has its own scene: Skill fusion.

Quiet mode

Off by default (compactSkillAnnounce). Instead of taking the whole screen, the Sage slides in from the bottom right corner and speaks in a small bubble: nothing is darkened, you keep playing. Same voice, same timing; at the end of an analysis, the bubble writes the whole sentence.

compactTiers picks which ranks go to the corner — the "not all or nothing" setting: a resistance picked up mid-fight does not need the same scene as an Ultimate skill. Ceremonies and evolutions always keep the full staging.

Subtitles

Everything the Sage says is subtitled in your game language (see Languages). The timing is not written anywhere: it is derived from the silences in the audio, exactly where the Sage draws breath. Skill names are shown in large type the moment they are spoken.

Interrupting an announcement

The Panic stop key — Delete by default, rebindable in Controls — clears everything, right away: the announcement queue, the voice, the Sage's bubble, the remarks, the microphone. It needs neither the skill nor a closed screen. Handy the day you give yourself every skill at once.

By default the announcement hides with the HUD when you press F1; showWithHiddenHud = true keeps it visible, handy to record without the health bar.

The Sage's five markers

As in the source material, the Sage opens its sentences with a one-syllable marker that tells you what kind of sentence follows. They are recorded separately and placed in front of the sentence automatically.

Kanji Romaji Meaning When the Sage uses it
告 Koku report, notice it informs you on its own: the start of every announcement, target confirmed, analysis aborted, level reached, learning complete
是 Ze affirmative a statement that proves you right — "already acquired"
了 Ryō understood, order received it carries something out: opening a page (analysis, observations, settings), feature unlocked, ending a requested analysis
否 Hi negative a refusal: not enough points, level or magicules, skill not owned or temporary, analysis failed, limit reached
解 Kai answer it answers a question — for instance when it asks whether to start learning

否。 — Hi. — "Negative."
