Great Sage menu
The Sage's menu (G key): its seven pages, the shader console and the classic menu, the dialogue bubble, Battle Mode and the panic key.
The Great Sage menu is not an interface laid over the game: it is the Sage himself. Press G and his icosahedron gathers in the middle of the screen while his seven faculties settle around him. From here you start analyses, grow his Growth tree, browse the Records and Observations, prepare battle mode and change the settings.
Opening the menu
- Key "Open the Great Sage", G by default (Great Sage category in Controls). Press G again or Esc to close.
- By voice: "open the menu", "show yourself" (voice commands).
- You must carry the Great Sage skill (
tensura:great_sage; the list is the client settingmenuSkills) or a Raphael (Great Sage's own or FoxAblaze Ultimate's). Without it the key answers in the action bar: "No answer. You do not carry the Great Sage." - The
sageInterfacegamerule must be on (it is by default). Set tofalse, nobody gets the menu, Assess mode, voice or analysis: only announcements and ceremonies remain. See Gamerules. - If another vanilla or modded control is bound to the same key as the menu, Great Sage tells you once per session in chat, naming the other control, so you can rebind one of them (Options → Controls).
The menu does not pause the game: the world keeps running behind it, otherwise the analysis it is there to follow would stop the moment you open it. On opening, the Sage greets you by world time: good morning, good day, good evening, good night.
The seven pages
| Page | Kanji | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Analyzing | 解析 | The constellation of your skills, grouped by class. Pick what the Sage will break down: Skill analysis. |
| Allocation | 配分 | Share his working capacity between running analyses (ten-cell gauges). See Skill analysis. |
| Growth | 成長 | The Growth tree: levels, points and nodes. See Growth tree. |
| Records | 能力 | Every skill in the modpack, owned or not. See Records. |
| Observations | 観測 | Creatures already read in Assess Mode (Assess Mode). See Observations. |
| Battle Mode | 戦闘 | Choose the skills the Sage raises for you in a fight. |
| Settings | 設定 | About thirty settings you can change without leaving the game. See Settings and What's new. |
Each page opens with its own line: "Understood. Analysis mode. Select the target skill.", "Learning mode.", "Displaying the ability records.", "Displaying observation records.", "Displaying settings."…
Battle Mode
A list of your skills (resistances are not in it: they are passive, there is nothing to raise), linked ones first. One click links or unlinks a skill, and the Sage confirms it out loud. The magnifier filters the list by name. Each row tells you how the Sage will hold it:
- held: a toggle skill, kept on as long as the mode lasts (the Sage turns it back on if the game switches it off);
- recast: a triggered skill, recast when its cooldown ends, never more than once every 5 seconds.
The linked list is saved in your client config (battleSkills). Battle mode is engaged and released by voice or /sage: "enable battle mode", "toggle battle mode", "stop". Releasing it switches off the toggle skills it was holding. See the voice command list. A linked skill that never goes on cooldown is suspended instead of recast in a loop, and the Sage tells you which one.
Two renderings: the console and the classic menu
The sageShaderRendering gamerule (true by default) picks the menu's look. Both do exactly the same thing, same pages, same questions, same packets; only the rendering changes.
The default rendering. Everything that is not text is painted by a shader: jade background and nebula, a hexagon grid crossed by a wave, the icosahedron gathering, seven glass hexagon tiles each carrying its kanji and tied to the Sage by threads of light, glass panels unfolding.
- The gold ring at the top right is your level: click it to open Growth.
- The small rings to its left are your analysis threads: click them to open Allocation.
- The Sage tucked in the corner is the back button.
- The console is laid out in a space of at least 640 × 360 and then fitted to your screen: it shrinks at a large GUI scale and grows on a very large screen, so nothing overlaps.
The original menu, drawn without shaders and kept intact: handy if your graphics card struggles or a shader pack interferes. Turn it on with /gamerule sageShaderRendering false.
- The icosahedron's thirty edges fly in from off screen, spinning, and land exactly where the core draws them; closing plays the assembly backwards.
- The faculties orbit the core, tied to it by threads.
- Picking a page tucks the Sage into the top left corner; clicking him brings him back to the centre.
- The round gauge at the top right fills during an analysis: click it for its card, with the red cross to stop it.
Controls inside the menu
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Left click | Open a page, pick a skill or a node, answer a question |
| Right-click a skill (Analyzing, Records) | Silence it: the Sage will not announce it again. Right-click again to undo |
| Right-click the funnel | Reset the filters |
| Magnifier | Search field (type on the keyboard, Backspace deletes) |
| Funnel | Sort and filter panel (Analyzing, Records, Observations) |
| Drag / scroll wheel | Scroll; on the Growth page, dragging moves the tree and the wheel zooms |
| Click the Sage | Go back one step |
| Esc | Close what is open (question, filter, search, card), then go back home, then close |
Before any irreversible action, the Sage asks: starting an analysis ("During the analysis, the target skill cannot be used. Proceed?") or spending growth points ("Points already spent cannot be taken back.").
Clicking a class that is still sealed on the Analyzing page makes him answer "Insufficient authority" along with what is missing: "Unique skills are still sealed: open them in the Growth tree."
The dialogue bubble
In the menu, what the Sage says comes from him: a bubble hooked to his core, with a tail pointing at him.
- The text is written at the pace of his voice (clip lengths are known), then the bubble stays 1.5 seconds.
- Every line opens on a one-syllable marker, as in the anime: 告 Koku (report), 是 Ze (affirmation), 了 Ryō (order received), 否 Hi (negation), 解 Kai (answer).
- A new line cuts the previous one: it is the same voice, it never doubles up.
- The same line is not repeated within 4 seconds (setting "Silence between repeats",
repeatGuardMs), so he does not comment on every click. - A small chime (
chimeClip, sfx.chime) plays before each line, and a very quiet ambience (menuAmbience) runs while the menu is open. Empty either value in the client config to turn it off (Configuration). - In the console the bubble sits level with the page name; in the classic menu, to the right of the Sage in the top band, so it never covers the pages.
Panic key
The "Stop Great Sage (panic)" key, Delete by default, clears everything at once: the announcement queue, the voice, the bubble, the remarks and voice listening. It works unconditionally, even without the skill and even in the middle of an endless announcement.
