Spontaneous remarks

The 30 remarks the Sage drops while you play: trigger, cooldown and cap of each, the general silence, and how to turn them off.

Released Mechanic v0.0.4 6 min read

The Great Sage does not only speak when you acquire a skill or ask him something: he watches you play, and drops a remark when he has something useful to say. Ore hidden behind the block you just broke, lava three blocks away, a creature behind you, a tool about to break, a better pickaxe sleeping in your bag… Thirty remarks, each with its Japanese line, its subtitle and its own limits, so that he stays a companion and never turns into a parrot.

What it looks like

A small Sage slides in from the bottom right corner of the screen, with a bubble carrying the subtitle, and speaks the remark out loud, opened by his 告 Koku marker. The bubble stays for the length of the line plus 2.6 seconds, then he leaves.

  • The remark is not drawn during Assess Mode or during a ceremony scene.
  • It never talks over anyone: if the Sage is already speaking, or if you are in the middle of a voice exchange with him (and for 4 seconds after), the remark is lost, not postponed: it described a moment that will be gone.
  • The panic key (Delete) clears it at once.

Two safeguards

  1. A general silence between any two remarks, whatever they are: tipQuietTicks, 600 ticks (30 seconds) by default. Nothing gets through before that, not even danger.
  2. Per remark, its own cooldown and, often, a cap: "it is dark here" is worth hearing the first few times, not the fiftieth. Life-threatening warnings have no cap: you never get tired of being told you are on fire.

The counters (cooldowns and caps) are kept per connection: they start over when you reconnect.

Every second, the Sage goes through the conditions in order of priority, and only one remark can come out at a time: your survival first, then the terrain, then your gear, then your progress, and finally the mood.

The thirty remarks

Cooldown = minimum rest before the same remark can come back; cap = maximum number of times per connection ("—": no limit).

Danger

Remark Trigger Cooldown Cap

"Hostile signatures: multiple." 4 or more hostile monsters within 12 blocks 60 s —

Mining and terrain

Remark Trigger Cooldown Cap

"A vein has been detected in the vicinity." Below Y 40, diamond or emerald ore within 6 blocks (4 vertically) 180 s —
"There is a cavity directly below." Below Y 60, air three blocks under your feet, solid ground right beneath you 120 s 8
"Lava is adjacent. Excavation is not recommended." Lava within 3 blocks 45 s —
"A water source lies behind you." Below Y 50, water within 3 blocks while you are not in it 90 s 6
"Light level insufficient. This is a hostile spawn zone." Light level 7 or lower where you stand 240 s 6
"Sunset is approaching." End of the day (just before nightfall) 900 s 5

Gear

Remark Trigger Cooldown Cap
"The tool in use is on the verge of breaking." The item in your hand has less than 10% durability left 90 s —
"You are carrying a more suitable tool." You break a block while a tool in your bag would mine it clearly faster 240 s 6
"Storage capacity has reached its limit." Inventory full 120 s —
"The stomach's free capacity is slight." Predator's stomach has only 10% of its slots free (at least one) 300 s —

Progress

Remark Trigger Cooldown Cap
"Mastery is nearing its ceiling." One of your skills is above 90% mastery without being mastered 300 s —
"Unanalysed abilities are present." You own at least one unmastered skill 30 min 4
"Existence value is approaching the evolution threshold." No trigger in the current version 600 s —

You, and the mood

Remark Trigger Cooldown Cap
"The individual's activity has ceased." Your death none —
"Reconstitution confirmed." Your respawn none —
"Rest is recommended." At night (when nothing else needs saying) 20 min 4
"Prolonged continuous activity confirmed." More than 1 h 30 of play in a row since you connected or last respawned 1 h 3
"At present, there is nothing to report." At random, when nothing else is happening (one chance in 600 per second) 30 min 3
"I support the master's judgement." same 30 min 3

Even without a cooldown of their own, death and respawn still obey the 30-second general silence.

Who hears them

  • You must carry the Great Sage skill (or a Raphael), always, whatever the needGreatSage rule says: without it, there is nobody to watch. Only skill announcements and ceremonies work without the Sage. See Gamerules.
  • Two switches, and both must agree: the server's (enableTips in greatsage-common.toml) and yours (enableTips in greatsage-client.toml, also on the Settings page as "Spontaneous remarks"). If the server turns them off you will not hear them; if you turn them off, the server cannot do anything about it.
  • With the animation turned off (enableOverlay, "On screen animation"), the small Sage and his bubble are not drawn, but the voice still plays.
