Qlipha Hosts (Demon Kings)

A creature carrying a Qlipha Crystal becomes a miniboss: eight times its health, three times its damage and the attacks of its Demon King. Killing it gives the crystal back, a little purer.

Early access Mob v0.0.2 6 min read

Planting a Qlipha Crystal in a creature turns it into a host: a miniboss possessed by the sephira's Demon King, the inverted Angel. It keeps its body — a zombie host is still a zombie — but it becomes far harder to bring down and strikes with the Angel's powers turned inside out. It is the heart of the purification loop: every host you kill gives the crystal back a little purer.

Creating a host

Hold a Qlipha Crystal and right-click a creature (never a player, never a creature that is already a host). Full details on implanting and purity: Qlipha Crystals.

The moment it takes the crystal:

  • it is fully healed, up to its new maximum health;
  • it will never despawn on its own, even far from players, and its state survives saving and chunk unloading;
  • it targets you;
  • players within 64 blocks read "Demon King 〈Creature〉 takes the crystal. Kill it to get the crystal back."

  • The name: the boss bar shows the Demon King, then the body it occupies — "Satan 〈Zombie〉", "Astaroth 〈Skeleton〉"… It takes the Demon King's colour and appears for every player within 48 blocks.
  • The mark: around the body you see a slowly turning six-spoked seal on the ground, a column of light and a halo at heart height, in the Demon King's glow. A host can be spotted from afar.
  • The powers: on top of its normal attacks, the host uses one of its Demon King's powers every 3 to 5 seconds, as long as it has a living target at most 26 blocks away and in sight. The damage of these powers follows its own attack damage (already tripled), with a minimum of 4 HP.

The eight Demon Kings

Sephira Demon King Inverted Angel Bar In short
Keter Satan Metatron purple four black-light cannons that surround and riddle
Chokmah Beelzebub Rasiel green summons flying servants, marks its prey
Binah Lucifugus Zaphkiel white teleports behind you and launches you
Chesed Astaroth Zadkiel blue a fan of ice needles and a pillar under your feet
Gevurah Asmodeus Camael pink two crescents of flame
Tiferet Belphegor Michael green three keys and a seal where you are heading
Netzach Baal Haniel yellow vanishes, darts off, blurs your sight
Yesod Lilith Gabriel purple a scream that pulls in and disorients everything around

Satan — Keter

The crown with black rays. With its first power, the host raises four cannons of light that float in a ring above it (Metatron's feathers, inverted). After that, every power sends them to surround the target a few blocks away and riddle it with rays: 6 HP per ray, each cannon firing about twice a second after a short wind-up, for at most 5.5 seconds. A new power on the same target extends the volley without breaking it.

Beelzebub — Chokmah

The counterfeit book. The host pulls two flying servants (vexes) out that rush its target; they fade after 20 seconds and leave no loot and no experience. The target starts glowing (visible through walls) and suffers Bad Luck for 10 seconds: the demon knows where it is.

Lucifugus — Binah

Zaphkiel's reverse doesn't touch time but space. The host teleports 2.2 blocks behind its target (in front of it if there is no room behind), turns to face it, and the ground gives way: the target is thrown up and backwards. No damage, but the fall and the host's follow-up blows do the job.

Astaroth — Chesed

The ice that no longer protects. The host fires a fan of five ice needles (Zadkiel's: 4 HP each, plus building cold), and raises a 3.5-block ice pillar under its target's feet that stays for 6 seconds and cuts off its path.

Asmodeus — Gevurah

The pyre. The host turns towards its target and hurls two of Camael's flame crescents 0.3 seconds apart, the second slightly higher to catch whoever jumped. Each crescent deals 1.4 times the host's attack damage.

Belphegor — Tiferet

The key turned lock. The host fires three of Michael's keys: one straight at the target, one where it is going, one where it was, each at its attack damage. And it lays a seal on the ground (3.2-block radius) where the target is about to be: it snaps shut after 1.1 seconds and deals 1.6 times its attack damage.

Baal — Netzach

The forgery that no longer comes undone. The host turns invisible for 3 seconds and gains Speed III meanwhile; its target suffers Nausea for 6 seconds and Darkness for 3 seconds. You no longer know where it will come from.

Lilith — Yesod

The song that no longer heals. The host lets out a scream: every living thing within 10 blocks that is not a monster — players, animals, villagers, pets — suffers Nausea for 5 seconds and Slowness III for 3 seconds, and is pulled towards the host.

Killing it

A host dies like any creature, and it doesn't matter how: sword, arrow, lava, a fall, another monster. On death:

  • the Qlipha Crystal it carried bursts out of its body, purer by an amount that depends on its EP (0.2 % to 20 %, see Qlipha Crystals); it never despawns and cannot be destroyed;
  • if purity reaches 100 %, the Sephira Crystal drops instead;
  • it also drops its normal creature loot;
  • a boss that served as a host (Wither, Warden, a Spirit…) gives back only its crystal: it does not also roll its 1 % chance of dropping a new Qlipha.

Players within 48 blocks read "Demon King lets go - the crystal is X% pure (+Y%)", or, at 100 %, "The crystal is pure. The Sephira of sephira is yours to take."

Tips

  • Break line of sight: a Demon King only uses its power if it can see you. A pillar, a wall, a corner is enough to make it lose its turn.
  • Against Lilith, stay more than 10 blocks away, and keep your animals and allies clear: the scream doesn't pick sides.
  • Against Lucifugus, watch your back and don't fight at the edge of a drop.
  • Against Belphegor, change direction at the last moment: the seal lands where you were heading.
  • Against Astaroth, sidestep: the pillar comes up under your feet and the needles fan out straight ahead of the host.
  • Pick your host well: a tough creature yields more purity, but it also has eight times its health and three times its damage. One big, well-prepared host is worth dozens of small ones.
