Thermal Element
Fire: burns, ignites, shields from fire.
The Thermal Element is the fire of the Underworld, the first one Kirito and Eugeo learn to cast. It hits a little harder than average and sets whatever it touches ablaze, but it is almost useless against creatures that do not fear flames. Clung to yourself, it becomes a shield against fire instead.
Generate Thermal ElementIn a volley
Every thermal element that hits a creature deals magic damage (armor does not reduce it) and sets it on fire for 4.5 s. A core burns longer: 3 s + 1.5 s per step of strength (the square root of the number of merged elements), so 7.5 s for a core of 9.
Against a fire-immune creature (Blaze, Ghast, Magma Cube, Strider…), the multiplier drops to ×0.2: switch to Cryogenic or Aqueous.
The arrow (Arrow Shape) damage above assumes a System Control Authority of 1 then 50; element power is 1 + SCA / 50. See Element shapes for the other shapes.
Burst Element
In a Burst, the thermal element sets fire to everything the explosion reaches. Mixed with other elements, it reacts more than any other:
| Mixed with | Reaction | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Aqueous | Steam | blindness 4 s |
| Aerial | Firestorm | radius ×1.4 |
| Cryogenic | They counter each other | damage ×0.3 |
| Metallic | Molten metal | damage ×1.4 |
Details: Element reactions.
Adhere
The aimed target (24 blocks) catches fire for 4 s + 2 s per element: 6 s for one, 24 s for ten.
With no creature in sight, the element lights a fire on the face of the block you look at (24 blocks), if the space is free. Otherwise it turns back to you.
With no target, you are put out and gain Fire Resistance for 10 s + 5 s per element (15 s for one, 60 s for ten).
In Grand Arts
When thermal dominates the cores, the Grand Art takes the epithet Flame: Flame Pillar, Flame Meteor, Flame Tempest, Flame Dome, Flame Rain. See Merge Element and Grand Arts.
