Element shapes

The fifteen shapes you can give held elements (Arrow, Spear, Vortex, Dragon…): speed, damage, range and quirks.

In development Mechanic v0.0.1 5 min read

A freshly generated element is only a small orb at a fingertip. Form Element, <Shape> Shape gives it a shape: the elements leave your fingers and line up in front of you, pointed where you look — arrows in a fan, swords in a portcullis, shields overlapping like scales. The shape decides everything: speed, damage, flight time, and what happens on impact. There are fifteen: twelve that fly, three that are placed.

Saying a shape

txt
System Call. Generate Luminous Element. Form Element, Arrow Shape. Discharge.
  • Form Element can be left out: Arrow Shape alone is enough (spoken, it often gets lost).
  • The shape applies to all held elements, and to each core.
  • You can change your mind: the last shape spoken is the one that leaves. The change from one to the other is visible (a little under half a second).
  • You must hold at least one element, otherwise: "There is no element to form."

Thrown shapes

Damage for one element at power 1, before the element's multiplier; speed in blocks per second; flight time before the element fades.

Shape Incantation Damage Speed Time Special
Orb (no shape) 3 26 3 s —
Arrow Arrow Shape 5 44 4 s fast, follows its target well
Bird Bird Shape 4 19 7 s weaves, hunts for a long time
Sword Sword Shape 9 27 4.5 s heavy
Spear Spear Shape 7 54 3.5 s goes through 3 creatures
Sphere Sphere Shape 4 17 4.5 s explodes in an area at the end of its flight
Crescent Crescent Shape 6 32 2.25 s spins and goes through everything
Serpent Serpent Shape 5 21 8 s weaves, turns sharpest of all
Needle Needle Shape 2.5 ×3 62 2.75 s three needles per element, goes through 1 creature
Chain Chain Shape 3 36 3.5 s binds: the target stops dead, Slowness VI 3 s
Dragon Dragon Shape 12 18 10 s weaves, hunts slowly, explodes in an area
Butterfly Butterfly Shape 3.5 20 8 s erratic flight; each hit heals you 1.5 health
Hammer Hammer Shape 10 23 3.5 s knocks the target away; shockwave of 3 blocks (40 % damage)

Actual damage is: shape damage × (1 + SCA / 50) × element multiplier. An umbra arrow at SCA 50 therefore deals 5 × 2 × 1 = 10.

Following the target

Without Fly Straight, elements chase the creature you are aiming at when you say Discharge (48 blocks, in a narrow cone around your gaze), or the one you designated with Trace. Each shape turns more or less sharply: serpent and butterfly stick to their prey, crescent and needle barely deviate. A traced target is chased four times longer, with tighter turns.

Area bursts

The sphere and the dragon explode at the end of their flight like a small Burst (at least three elements' worth). Any core of 8 elements or more does the same, whatever its shape.

Placed shapes

They do not fly: they appear on the spot at Discharge and stay for a while. The dominant element of what you held gives them its colour and effect. Their size and duration depend on the total number of elements (cores included).

A vertical disc two steps in front of you, facing your gaze. It stops other people's projectiles (arrows, fireballs, enemy elements); yours pass through. It does not follow you.

  • Radius: 1.4 blocks for one element, 3.1 for ten, 9 at most.
  • Duration: 4 s + 1 s per element (34 s at most).

A wall set on the ground, a few blocks in front of you, across your line of sight. It stops other people's projectiles and pushes back creatures trying to cross it (neither you nor your allies).

  • Half-width: 2.4 blocks for one element, 4.4 for ten, 14 at most; height about 1.3 times the half-width.
  • Duration: 10 s + 0.5 s per element (40 s at most).

A whirlwind placed on the aimed creature, or where you look (32 blocks). It pulls everything around it toward its axis, spins it and lifts it, inflicting its element twice a second: a fire vortex burns, an ice vortex freezes, a water vortex douses and pushes.

  • Radius: 2.1 blocks for one element, 3.4 for ten, 10 at most; it pulls from up to 1.8 times that radius.
  • Duration: 5 s + 0.25 s per element (20 s at most).
  • Damage per hit: 1 + 0.5 × √(elements), × power and element multiplier.

Shapes and cores

A plain shape spoken on cores (Merge Element) makes each core a giant of that shape: bigger (up to six times), slower, and far stronger — a core of n elements hits like n^0.85 elements (a core of 10 ≈ 7 arrows in one).
